Meerkat Movies is Compare the Market's 2 for 1 cinema ticket scheme: one code a week, valid on a Tuesday or Wednesday, cheapest ticket free. For years the catch was that you had to buy insurance or another qualifying product to get it. That changed on 23 July 2026: there is now an app-only membership that needs no purchase at all. Download the Compare the Market app, sign in and the weekly codes are yours until 19 July 2027. How the Meerkat Movies 2 for 1 offer actually works

The mechanics are the same whichever way you join. Each week you get one voucher code. It works for one screening on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Buy two or more tickets for the same film and showing, enter the code online or show it at the ticket desk, and the cheapest ticket is free. Codes are single use, and a fresh one appears every Thursday at 00:00:01. The old code, if unused, dies at 23:59:59 on Wednesday - Compare the Market's terms are precise about that. No rollover, no stockpiling, use it or lose it.

Two details catch people out. First, the free ticket is the cheapest of the pair, so if you book a standard seat and your friend books a recliner, you pay for the recliner. Second, by default you cannot use this week's code to pre-book a screening in a future week - though some chains relax this: Odeon lets you book the following Tuesday or Wednesday from 1am on Thursday, as soon as the new code lands.

Two ways to get Meerkat Movies in 2026

Since 23 July 2026 there are two routes in, and the difference matters.

The app-only membership (free). Compare the Market brands this the App-only Rewards Membership. Download the Compare the Market app, create or sign into an account and activate Meerkat Movies in the Rewards section. No purchase, no card details, no quote needed. You get the weekly 2 for 1 cinema code and nothing else - the Meerkat Meals restaurant codes and Caffè Nero discount are not included. Compare the Market currently advertises this membership as running until 11:59pm on 19 July 2027. Whether it continues beyond that date is not stated, so treat it as a long promotion rather than a permanent fixture.

The qualifying product membership (full rewards). Buy a qualifying product through Compare the Market and you get the full package for 12 months from the purchase date: Meerkat Movies plus Meerkat Meals and 25% off at Caffè Nero. Qualifying products cover most of what the site compares: car, home, pet, travel, van, bike, caravan, motorhome, landlord, business, health and life insurance, plus energy, broadband and TV, mobile contracts, credit cards, loans and car finance. Notable exceptions that do not qualify: breakdown cover, boiler cover, mortgages, savings accounts and current accounts.

Already bought something through Compare the Market? You qualify retrospectively. Sign into an account registered with the same email you used for the purchase and claim from the Your Rewards section. One warning: your 12 months runs from the purchase date, not the day you claim, so an old policy may have less reward time left than you expect. Cancelling a product within 30 days cancels the membership too.

Activating and using your codes

Codes live in the Compare the Market app or on the rewards website once you are signed in. Redemption works three ways: enter the code at the cinema's online checkout, show it in the cinema's own app where supported, or read it out at the box office. No smartphone? Write the code down or print it - the box office route accepts that.

Booking fees are set by the cinema, not by Meerkat Movies, and they differ in an annoying way. Cineworld charges £1 per ticket booked online including the free one, so a 2 for 1 pair costs £2 in fees. Odeon charges its £1 online fee on the paid ticket only - the free ticket is exempt. Showcase has the oddest quirk: you cannot redeem codes in its mobile app at all, so book through its website or at the venue. Booking at the box office avoids online fees everywhere, at the cost of turning up without a guaranteed seat.

Which cinemas take Meerkat Movies?

All the major chains participate in 2026: Odeon, Cineworld, Vue, Showcase and Picturehouse, each confirmed on their own websites in August 2026. A handful of exclusions apply within them - Cineworld Dublin and Jersey are out, and a small number of Odeon sites are excluded - and plenty of smaller independent chains take the codes too, though Compare the Market publishes no master list. What is included, and what costs extra

The offer is built around standard 2D tickets. Premium formats are allowed at most chains but carry an uplift that can be charged on both tickets, including the free one - Compare the Market's terms name IMAX, 3D, 4DX, D-BOX, Superscreen, Luxe and VIP seating among the examples. So a 2 for 1 IMAX booking means paying one full IMAX ticket plus an uplift on each of the two seats, at whatever rate your cinema charges. Still cheaper than two full tickets, but not the free night out the branding suggests. Excluded outright everywhere: premieres, previews, event cinema (live theatre, opera and ballet broadcasts), private screenings and group bookings.

Is Meerkat Movies worth it in 2026?

The maths used to hinge on the cheapest qualifying product. The app-only membership deletes that question: the codes now cost nothing, so if you ever go to the cinema in a pair on a Tuesday or Wednesday, activating it costs nothing and can only leave you better off. Two visits a month at a typical £10 adult ticket is roughly £120 a year back. Even one trip a quarter beats not having it.

The real question now is whether Meerkat Movies alone is enough, and that depends on frequency. When codes do not work

Most failures trace to four causes. The screening is not a Tuesday or Wednesday. The code has expired or was already used - remember Wednesday 23:59:59 is the hard stop. The screening is excluded (premieres, event cinema, or an excluded venue like Cineworld Dublin). Or the membership itself has lapsed - a qualifying-product membership ends 12 months after purchase, sooner than people expect when they claimed late. If the app will not generate a code at all, check you are signed in with the email attached to your membership, and that this week's code has not already been used.
