Meerkat Movies gives you 2 for 1 cinema tickets every Tuesday or Wednesday, and since July 2026 the basic membership is free through the Compare the Market app. The offer itself is simple. The rules around it are not: codes expire at a precise minute, chains write their own exclusion lists, one chain will not take codes in its app and two Cineworld sites do not take them at all. Meerkat Movies days: when codes actually work
Codes are valid for screenings on Tuesday or Wednesday only. You get one code per week and it is single use: one screening, one redemption, gone. The weekly cycle runs Thursday to Wednesday. Compare the Market's own terms give the exact times: a new code becomes available at 00:00:01 on Thursday, and an unused code expires at 23:59:59 on the following Wednesday. Cineworld's pages quote a near-identical 00:00:59 Thursday cut-off - in practice both mean midnight Wednesday. Nothing rolls over and you cannot bank codes for a blockbuster fortnight.
Two timing wrinkles worth knowing. A late Wednesday screening is fine - the code needs redeeming before midnight, and the film can run past it. And advance booking is chain-dependent: Compare the Market's default is that codes only work for that week's Tuesday or Wednesday. Odeon is the exception: it lets you book the following week's showing from 1am on Thursday, the moment your new code lands.
Participating cinemas and chain-specific rules
Five major chains take Meerkat Movies in 2026, each confirmed on their own site: Odeon, Cineworld, Vue, Showcase and Picturehouse. Many smaller chains and independents also participate, but Compare the Market publishes no public list - the cinema finder in its app is the only definitive check. Everyman has never participated. One national quirk, straight from Compare the Market's terms: in Northern Ireland the code applies only to the standard full-price ticket, not the discounted price available on Tuesdays.

The full exclusions list
Compare the Market's terms bar the codes from a consistent set of screenings everywhere: premieres, previews and pre-release screenings, event cinema, live and as-live broadcasts (theatre, opera, ballet and concerts), private screenings, private hires, school and corporate bookings and bulk ticket purchases. The chains then add their own: Cineworld excludes its Movies for Juniors kids' screenings, and Odeon excludes Odeon Kids, Silver Cinema, Screen Unseen and family tickets - the code needs a standard adult ticket as its base. If a screening carries its own promotional price or special ticket category, check the cinema's Meerkat terms before booking.
Premium formats: the uplift rule
Premium formats are not excluded, they are surcharged - and the surcharge can hit both tickets, including the free one. Compare the Market's terms name IMAX, 3D, D-BOX, 4DX, Superscreen, Luxe, VIP and premium seating among the examples, plus 3D glasses. In practice an IMAX pair on a Meerkat code means one full ticket plus the uplift on each of the two seats, at your cinema's current rate. That is still well under two full IMAX tickets, which makes premium screenings one of the smartest uses of a code - just not a free one. The one hard exclusion to remember is Showcase Gallery seating, which the code cannot buy at any price.
Using the rules to your advantage
Three habits get the most out of the scheme. Spend codes on expensive screenings: the free ticket is worth more against a £15 city-centre showing or a premium format than a £5 off-peak one. Check the release calendar before the week starts: big films open on Fridays, so the Tuesday or Wednesday five days later is often the sweet spot, and spending a code on a £6 off-peak week is poor value when a £14 blockbuster lands the next one. And pick your redemption channel deliberately: box office avoids online fees entirely, Odeon online only charges its £1 fee on the paid ticket, while Cineworld online costs £2 in fees per pair. Small numbers, but they compound over a year of weekly codes.
Where Meerkat Movies stops making sense is frequency. One midweek code a week is a hard ceiling, and solo trips get nothing from it. What days can I use Meerkat Movies?
Tuesday or Wednesday only, for one screening per week. The weekly code arrives at 00:00:01 on Thursday and expires unused at 23:59:59 the following Wednesday. Codes never work for weekend screenings.
Can I use my code at any Cineworld?
Almost - Cineworld Dublin and Cineworld Jersey are excluded, and Movies for Juniors screenings do not qualify anywhere. Every other UK Cineworld participates, with a £1 per ticket online booking fee that also applies to the free ticket.
What counts as event cinema?
Live and recorded broadcasts of things that are not films: theatre, opera, ballet, concerts and sport. These are excluded from Meerkat Movies at every chain, along with premieres, previews and private screenings.
Do I pay extra for IMAX or 3D with a Meerkat code?
Yes. Premium format uplifts can be charged on both tickets including the free one - £5 per ticket for IMAX at Cineworld, for example. Showcase Gallery seating is excluded entirely rather than surcharged.
Can I book next week's screening with this week's code?
By default no - codes cover the current week's Tuesday or Wednesday. Odeon is the exception, letting you book the following week's showing from 1am Thursday once the new code is issued. Other chains may vary, so check before relying on it.
Why will the Showcase app not take my code?
Showcase does not support Meerkat Movies redemption in its mobile app. Book through the Showcase website or at the venue instead - the code itself is fine, the channel is the problem.
How long does Meerkat Movies membership last?
The free app-only membership currently runs to 19 July 2027. A qualifying product membership lasts 12 months from the purchase date, and a further qualifying purchase extends it another 12 months from that date.
