Your passive digital footprint is the data collected while you get on with your day - no posting required, and usually no noticing either. The main mechanisms, in plain English:

  • Cookies. Small files sites store in your browser. Some are essential (your basket, staying signed in); the advertising and analytics kind are what an "accept all" click switches on.
  • Your IP address. Every site you visit sees the address your connection comes from, which reveals your rough area.
  • Tracking pixels. Snippets of ad-platform code inside ordinary pages. On shops that run the Meta pixel, viewing a product or adding it to a basket can be reported to the ad system as a named event.
  • Search and activity logs. Signed-in searches and browsing feed the record platforms hold about you - what Google knows about you is mostly this kind of data.
  • App location access. An app granted "always" permission can log where you are in the background, not just while you use it.
  • Your device's fingerprint. Screen size, fonts, time zone, language and other settings combine into a signature that can identify your browser without any cookies at all.

The two halves matter for different reasons. The active half is readable by people: many employers look candidates up, and an old post reads differently a decade on. It is also stickier than the delete button suggests. Platforms take time to purge deleted content from their systems and backups, copies that others made or quoted are not yours to delete and search results can lag deletions by days or weeks. Once something is out there, it is hard to take back fully - which is an argument for a moment's thought before posting, not for fear.

The passive half is read by systems. Its risk is not embarrassment but accumulation: a detailed, sellable picture of your habits, interests and routines, assembled without you ever posting a thing.   • Tidy the back catalogue. Old posts inherit your current judgment. Most platforms let you bulk-limit past audiences, and tag-review settings control what others can pin to you.
