Your phone isn't listening. What's actually happening is stranger

Your phone is not recording your conversations to sell you things - and the truth is stranger. Here is why the microphone is innocent, what ad targeting actually uses instead and the settings that genuinely reduce the creepy timing.

You mention a weekend in Cornwall over lunch and cottage ads appear that evening. You talk about getting a dog and dog food fills your Facebook feed the next day. It feels like the only possible explanation is that your phone is listening. You are not imagining the pattern - something real is happening. It just is not the microphone, and once you see what ad targeting actually runs on, the listening theory starts to look almost quaint.

Why your phone is not listening for ads

Start with what would have to be true. Constant phone listening for ads would mean recording all day, turning speech into text and shipping it somewhere - which would show up in the two places you can already check: your battery and your data usage. It would also have to get past both operating systems, which put a visible indicator on the microphone. On a current iPhone an orange dot appears at the top of the screen whenever any app uses the mic; on modern Android it is a green indicator, and a privacy dashboard lists exactly which apps used the microphone and when. Silent background recording without that indicator is exactly what the permission systems are built to stop.

The one thing on your phone that genuinely does listen - the "Hey Siri" or "Hey Google" wake word - is built narrow. Your phone analyses a rolling few seconds of sound on the device itself, listening for one acoustic pattern. Google's own documentation puts it plainly: if no activation is detected, those snippets are not sent or saved anywhere. Apple describes a dedicated low-power processor that does nothing but score audio against the wake phrase, and says that on modern iPhones even your requests are processed on the device unless you choose to share them. Amazon says the same about Echo speakers: no audio is stored or sent to the cloud until the wake word is detected, at which point a light tells you it is streaming. Do assistants sometimes wake by mistake? Yes - Google concedes that noise similar to "Hey Google" can trigger one, which is why the light and the activity history exist. A mis-trigger you can see and delete is a very different thing from a hidden tap.

And when researchers went looking for the hidden tap, they did not find one. A Northeastern University team tested more than 17,000 Android apps in a peer-reviewed study known as Panoptispy and found no evidence of any app covertly recording and sending audio. What they did catch was one analytics tool silently recording the screen of a shopping app - which is the whole story in miniature. The spying they found was watching, not listening, because watching what you do is easier, cheaper and more useful than hearing what you say.

What's actually happening instead: how ad targeting really works

Advertising platforms do not need your voice, because you hand over something better all day: behaviour. The machinery is public - the platforms document it for their advertisers - and it comes down to a few mechanisms:

  • What you browse. Millions of sites and apps carry small pieces of platform code - the Meta pixel and its equivalents - that report your visits, searches and baskets back to the ad systems. Look at a pair of trainers once and a retargeting audience remembers.
  • Where you go. Meta openly offers advertisers people who "live in, have recently spent time in or go often to" an area, using signals like where you connect to the internet. Visit an outdoor shop and the ads know, no audio required.
  • Who you know. Lookalike and connection tools let advertisers reach people who resemble their existing customers - their demographics, interests and behaviours. If a close friend is deep in wedding planning, you fit a pattern worth advertising to.
  • What people like you do next. The models are predictive. Enough people who searched knee pain remedies went on to look for physiotherapists that you get the physio ad before you have thought of it yourself.

That is the stranger truth the title promises: the system does not react to what you said. It predicts what you will want, from data you gave it without noticing - which is arguably more unsettling than a microphone, and is certainly more effective.

How one conversation becomes an ad without the microphone

Run the Cornwall example through the machinery and the mystery mostly dissolves:

  1. Weeks ago you searched "Cornwall dog friendly cottage" once, or lingered on a travel article, or your partner did on the wifi you share. A pixel logged it.
  2. You joined an audience of people showing holiday intent - alongside signals like the time of year and what people your age in your area book.
  3. At lunch, the trip came up in conversation. Not by coincidence: you talked about it because you are planning it - the same reason the ad system already had you filed.
  4. That evening an ad served weeks into your intent window landed. The conversation and the ad share a cause; neither caused the other.
  5. You remembered the hit and forgot the misses - the dozens of ads that day with no spooky story attached.

Even the cases that feel airtight usually bend this way. Discussed a friend's wedding in Greece on WhatsApp and then saw flight ads? WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted - the likelier route is the friend's own flight searches, your connection to them and the fact that flights to Athens get advertised heavily all summer.

Why the timing feels so uncanny

The last step of that list is doing more work than it seems. Psychologists call it the frequency illusion, sometimes known as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon: once something is on your mind, you notice every appearance of it and your sense of how often it appears inflates. Pair that with confirmation bias - keeping the evidence that fits the theory, discarding the rest - and a handful of genuine coincidences a year is enough to make "my phone listens to me" feel proven in your own experience.

There is a reassuring test hiding in that. If phones really listened, the ads would follow your conversations reliably - every mentioned product, every time. They do not. They follow your searches, your visits and your patterns, which is why the "hits" cluster around things you were already close to buying.

Do iPhone and Android handle this differently?

On the microphone question the two platforms agree: visible in-use indicators, per-app permissions and no silent background recording on current, updated software. On ad tracking their philosophies differ:

  • iPhone asks first. Since App Tracking Transparency arrived, apps must request permission to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and "Ask App Not to Track" cuts off the advertising identifier. There is also an App Privacy Report (in Settings under Privacy & Security) showing exactly when each app touched the mic, camera or your location.
  • Android shows you everything and lets you act. The privacy dashboard lists a week of sensor access on recent versions, and you can delete your advertising ID outright - apps that ask for it then receive a string of zeros.

Neither platform will stop ad targeting built on your logged-in accounts and browsing - that lives in the platforms' own settings, which is where the next section goes.

What you can actually do about ad targeting

  • Audit microphone access: on iPhone, Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone; on Android, Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Turn off anything that does not obviously need it - most apps do not.
  • On iPhone, turn off app tracking requests (Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking). On Android, delete your advertising ID (Settings > Privacy, or Security and privacy > More privacy settings, then Ads - menus vary by manufacturer).
  • Turn off personalised ads where you spend time: Google's My Ad Centre, Meta's Ad preferences (in your account settings) and Apple's own toggle under Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising. Be clear about the deal: the platforms all say you will see the same number of ads, just less accurately aimed.

Worth an evening:

  • In your Meta settings, find "Your activity off Meta technologies" to see which businesses have been reporting your visits, clear the history and disconnect future activity. UK menus differ slightly and move around - search Settings for "off Meta" if the path does not match.
  • Tighten the browser side, where much of the tracking actually happens: stricter tracking protection, fewer signed-in sessions and a clear-eyed view of what incognito mode does and does not hide.

Know the limits: a VPN hides which sites you visit from your network, not who you are from the platforms you sign into. And no setting reduces the number of ads - only how much they know when aiming.

The stranger truth about what your phone knows

Two things are true at once. Your phone is not listening to your conversations for advertisers - the evidence, the engineering and the economics all point the same way. And something invasive is happening: a profile built from your searches, locations, purchases and patterns, detailed enough to predict what you'll want before you've said it out loud. The microphone theory survives because it is easier to picture than the real thing.

Look at the top of your screen: current iPhones show an orange dot whenever any app uses the microphone, and modern Android shows a green indicator.
